In The Line Of Duty (1986): Breakdown by Kain424<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After a trio of off-duty police thwart an airline hijacking, they are targeted by vengeful war veterans.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THEIR BADASSITUDE]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">THE HEROES:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9499 aligncenter\" title=\"Yo, Michelle!\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/31-2.jpg\" alt=\"Yo, Michelle!\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Michelle Yeoh <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">is Michelle Yip<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yip is not unlike Yeoh&#8217;s characterization of Inspector Ng from <strong>Yes, Madam<\/strong>, though here she has slight character details and deals with moral conflict.\u00a0 She&#8217;s essentially a very tough female cop in good standing with all her colleagues.\u00a0 In fact, her peers respect her so much as to lie to their superiors to protect her when she decides to go rogue.\u00a0 The role, in effect, exemplifies everything that made Yeoh work so well at the time.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not that she&#8217;s terribly proficient in the martial arts (but she is rather good), but that she&#8217;s incredibly tough and more than willing to go the distance against her foes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/21-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9505 aligncenter\" title=\"Women Drivers\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/21-2.jpg\" alt=\"Women Drivers\" width=\"508\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a surprising turn for the Hong Kong film industry, Yeoh&#8217;s female cop is allowed to court a love interest and be the mature person in the relationship.\u00a0 She&#8217;s also seen as being generally able to balance her social life and police duty admirably.\u00a0 This basically rights all the wrongs committed by Yeoh&#8217;s previous film.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/51-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9500 aligncenter\" title=\"Wong, Michael Wong\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/51-1.jpg\" alt=\"Wong, Michael Wong\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/51-1.jpg 506w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/51-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Michael Wong<\/span> is Michael Wong<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yeah, what a stretch.\u00a0 Still, I&#8217;ve seen Wong work quite well as a villain (<strong>Legacy Of Rage<\/strong>), so his turn here as an immature doofus is surprisingly effective.\u00a0 Wong is a &#8220;sky marshal&#8221;, and thus not quite on the same level as the other two main characters.\u00a0 He has a simple, single-mindedness about him that makes him almost childlike but also intense when he needs to be.\u00a0 It&#8217;s through his blind devotion to Michelle Yip that he finds out about the final surviving bad guy, but through the same means endangers his friends and\u00a0 drives others away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/41-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9501 aligncenter\" title=\"&quot;Go ahead. Make my day!&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/41-1.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Go ahead. Make my day!&quot;\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/41-1.jpg 506w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/41-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hiroyuki Sanada <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">is Peter Yamamoto<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yamamoto is a highly skilled fighter and Japanese policeman, merely going to China to retrieve his family.\u00a0 His intent, despite his longing to serve out sweet justice, is to retire from the force and find a desk job so that his wife will no longer worry.\u00a0 Unfortunately for his wife and kid, Yamamoto&#8217;s sense of justice outweighs his sense of familial duty&#8230; unless they are what is threatened.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">THE VILLAINS:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bad1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9502 aligncenter\" title=\"Da Bad Guys!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bad1.jpg\" alt=\"Da Bad Guys!\" width=\"547\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These four ex-soldiers were made blood brothers through a harsh war experience.\u00a0 When one of their own is arrested, the others are quick to stage a rescue attempt.\u00a0 It is in this rescue attempt that the resulting plot begins.\u00a0 But damn it if they were ever given names.\u00a0 All we are shown is their considerable fighting skills and loyalty to one another.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t even know what their ultimate goal was in the first place.\u00a0 Was there one?<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE SEX AND VIOLENCE]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite our quad of villains being desperately and insanely loyal to one another, there doesn&#8217;t seem to be too much emphasis on anything even remotely gay.\u00a0 And as for our heroes, Peter is married (albeit somewhat unhappy&#8230; but look at that cute little kid!\u00a0 You know he loves his wife at LEAST for that!), and Michael is hopelessly smitten with Michelle.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As I said earlier, this film is a watermark for progressive women roles in Hong Kong movies.\u00a0 While there were certainly women ass-kickers before this (Angela Mao made a career doing it), <strong>Royal Warriors<\/strong> completely undoes at least the blatant female-empowerment phobia and sexism that marred <strong>Yes, Madam<\/strong>.\u00a0 Now if they could just do the same for <a title=\"The Inspector Wears Skirts (1988)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1582\" target=\"_self\"><strong>The Inspector Wears Skirts<\/strong><\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">MURDER BY NUMBERS: [ 25 ]<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I counted 25, but there could have been upwards of 30 due to the nature of the car crashes during the chase sequence at the film&#8217;s center and a sword attack in the opening.\u00a0 This might not sound like a lot until you realize that only five of the deaths were people involved in the main plot.\u00a0 The rest are all innocent bystanders gunned down or blown up by our asshole bad guys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/71-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9512 aligncenter\" title=\"Very Sad Deaths\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/71-2.jpg\" alt=\"Very Sad Deaths\" width=\"505\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And every pretty much single death in the film is seen in violent, gory detail.\u00a0 Squibs, fake blood, tears, the works.\u00a0 It almost takes you out of the film, one minute we&#8217;ll be having a good time with chase sequences and martial arts fighting and the next we&#8217;re seeing a man cry over his brother&#8217;s gunned down corpse.\u00a0 We get deaths from bullets, burning, explosions, and falling.\u00a0 Gross.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE BEST OF THE REST]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">EPIC MOMENT:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/1-28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9509 aligncenter\" title=\"So much for the best-laid plans\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/1-28.jpg\" alt=\"So much for the best-laid plans\" width=\"508\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The villain digs up the body of Michelle&#8217;s friend and uses it as bait to lure her into his trap.\u00a0 But rather than play any more games with this psycho, she takes an armored car from the police station and drives it through the support beams of the baddie&#8217;s lair. Effectively destroying most of his well-laid plans and his cover.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">BEST LINE:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Media celebrities because of their very public foiling of the airplane hijacking, the media hounds Michelle even at the funeral of one of her friends.\u00a0 When asked by the journalists if she had any comment on the case, she glares into the camera and snaps a threat at the remaining villain:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/101-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9508 aligncenter\" title=\"Michelle is PISSED!\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/101-1.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle is PISSED!\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/101-1.jpg 506w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/101-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;That man is <em>dead<\/em>!&#8221;<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE EXECUTION]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before going into too much detail about what I thought of the film itself, I think it&#8217;s probably best to talk a bit of history concerning the movie&#8217;s title.\u00a0 Though originally titled <strong>Royal Warriors<\/strong>, the producers decided to turn a quick buck by later re-releasing the film as <strong>In The Line Of Duty<\/strong>, and putting out <a title=\"Yes, Madam (1985)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1036\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Yes, Madam<\/strong><\/a> (actually filmed and released a year earlier) as a retroactive sequel, calling it <strong>In The Line Of Duty 2<\/strong>.\u00a0 Strangely,\u00a0 when one of the film&#8217;s producers (Dickson Poon) married Yeoh, he talked her into early retirement, necessitating a recast in the lead role for their &#8220;new&#8221; series of films.\u00a0 Eventually, they would cast the similarly-named Cynthia Khan (Yeoh was going under the name Michelle Khan at the time), who would go on to star in the next four of the five sequels.\u00a0 Talk about being chronologically confused.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/9-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9504 aligncenter\" title=\"I Think She Likes It\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/9-1.jpg\" alt=\"I Think She Likes It\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/9-1.jpg 506w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/9-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal Warriors<\/strong> is one of those films I&#8217;m a bit surprised more people haven&#8217;t heard about.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got about everything you could ask for: car chases, shootouts, martial arts fights, explosions, bad-ass babes, and a rather high bodycount.\u00a0 It&#8217;s part buddy-cop flick, part chick action movie, but definitely a great follow up for Michelle Yeoh to her excellent turn as a positive ass kicker in <strong>Yes, Madam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of that film, Meng Hoi, who performed action choreography duties and acted in <strong>Yes, Madam<\/strong>, and was a part of Sammo Hung&#8217;s stunt team, returns here to once again do the fight scenes.\u00a0 And he did a damn great job at it, too.\u00a0 From the opening street fight to the airplane hijack foiling, to the final chainsaw\/sharp and blunt objects\/random tool battle at the climax, we are treated to perfect examples of what made Hong Kong action so great during this era.\u00a0 The fights are high energy, quick, creative, and impressively brutal.\u00a0 I lost track of the times Yeoh was choked, thrown into some breakable object or kicked in the tits. Sure, they gave a female the lead role, but she clearly had to suffer for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/8-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9503 aligncenter\" title=\"Awesome Car Chase\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/8-1.jpg\" alt=\"Awesome Car Chase\" width=\"505\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/8-1.jpg 505w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/8-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a car chase at one point that&#8217;s one of my all time favorites in the genre.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a car chasing a car chasing a car kind of chase right through the middle of the city. It&#8217;s an adrenaline-pumping several minutes, cutting masterfully between high speed crashes and slow motion stunt jumps.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, when choosing whether or not to watch an action movie, I have to ask, &#8220;Is there a fight involving a chainsaw?&#8221;\u00a0 Well, I&#8217;m happy to report that this time there is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/111-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9511 aligncenter\" title=\"Phallic?\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/111-1.jpg\" alt=\"Phallic?\" width=\"506\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/111-1.jpg 506w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/111-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Because you totally needed another reason to see this film, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal Warriors<\/strong> is just a plain old good time.\u00a0 I do think it takes itself a bit more seriously than it should, but then, that&#8217;s kinda what many of Michelle Yeoh&#8217;s Hong Kong films did.\u00a0 Perhaps it was in their race to balance out the silly idea that women could also be police officers that they forgot to just tone down the melodrama a bit and let the audience just have some fun.\u00a0 Oh well, this is still a fun ride.
