Vietnam soldiers, the government creates a platoon of seemingly invincible super soldiers.\u00a0 When one begins to remember who he was in his past life and escapes, explosions, car chases, and fighting ensues in this epic versus film.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE EXECUTION]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Versus films are tricky to pull off, especially in the Action genre.\u00a0 Fans take sides and budgets rise.\u00a0 And for what?\u00a0 Usually a couple stare-downs, no real fight between the two main players, and a cop-out ending.\u00a0 <strong>Universal Soldier<\/strong> is different, though.\u00a0 And while by many standards it&#8217;s a bad movie with corny dialog and a stupid premise, as these types of films go,\u00a0 it&#8217;s one of the best.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5263   aligncenter\" title=\"Bus Chase Explosion\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/82.jpg\" alt=\"Bus Chase Explosion\" width=\"544\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Originally to be directed by <strong>Code Of Silence<\/strong> director and Steven Seagal collaborator Andrew Davis, the movie ultimately went to Roland Emmerich.\u00a0 The choice is an odd one, seeing as Davis had experience working with Action stars and would go on to make the Academy Award winning <strong>The Fugitive<\/strong>.\u00a0 But perhaps the studio execs felt Emmerich&#8217;s work on the sci-fi cult film <strong>Moon 44<\/strong> was just that good.\u00a0 Whatever the reason, Emmerich manages to pull it off with surprisingly little fanfare and no destruction of major landmarks.\u00a0 An impressive feat for the director of <a title=\"Independence Day (1996)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1285\" target=\"_self\">Independence Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned above, the story concerns the use of the bodies of soldiers who &#8220;died&#8221; in previous wars for the purpose of making an elite group of impervious weapons, powerful and only human enough to take orders without question.\u00a0 Lundren&#8217;s character was a soldier driven mad by the war in Vietnam and ended up killing the platoon under his command, Van Damme included.\u00a0 After being tested in the field, Van Damme and Lundgren begin to remember who they were and their rivalry is born anew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5264   aligncenter\" title=\"I'm All Ears\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/14.jpg\" alt=\"I'm All Ears\" width=\"544\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Action is fairly simplistic and a lot of it feels like <a title=\"The Terminator (1984)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1277\" target=\"_self\">Terminator<\/a>-lite, but much of the film&#8217;s fun comes from an impressively energetic Dolph Lundgren.\u00a0 Completely stealing the show, this is easily my favorite role for the Dolphster.\u00a0 While everyone else is playing it straight and often quite gloomy, Lundgren is shouting, shooting, and screaming for more.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps with it being the first time he&#8217;d played a villain since <strong>Rocky IV<\/strong>, Dolph thought he&#8217;d play it the polar opposite of his usual stoic character.\u00a0 Easily the standout performance of the whole movie, I am honestly surprised he didn&#8217;t get more recognition, and certainly more mainstream work, after this.<\/p>\n<p>Van Damme plays a slight variation on his usual noble-but-strangely-charming-and-innocent character.\u00a0 His performance shows that he could have very well been a terminator in a cheap follow-up to <a title=\"Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=2657\" target=\"_self\">Terminator 2<\/a> (which this film almost is).\u00a0 Still, his acrobatics make for great fight scenes and his accent does much in giving the film some humor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5262   aligncenter\" title=\"Ralf Moeller\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/22.jpg\" alt=\"Ralf Moeller\" width=\"544\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though the <strong>Terminator<\/strong> comparisons are as inevitable as they are sometimes obvious, <strong>Universal Soldier<\/strong> ends up being such a nice ride that you really do forget.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s an accomplishment in and of itself.\u00a0 Aside from our leads, we get to see some smaller roles filled by respectable Action regulars like Ed O&#8217;Ross as the Colonel in charge of the super soldiers, Ralf Moeller returning again to a Van Damme film after his awesome demise in <strong>Cyborg<\/strong>, and in even smaller roles Tiny Lister and Chuck Norris&#8217;s kid Eric Norris as universal soldiers.\u00a0 Michael Jai White also appears (albeit very briefly), which is great as he&#8217;ll play a larger part in the film&#8217;s sequel.<\/p>\n<p>For your buck you get explosions, shootouts, and multiple fights between JCVD and Lundgren.\u00a0 Is it worth it?\u00a0 Fuck yeah.\u00a0 How often do you get to see two great Action stars, in their PRIME, duke it out?\u00a0 Fucking never!\u00a0 You owe it as a fan of the genre to check this one out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[HOW BAD-ASS ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS?]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5259   aligncenter\" title=\"Van Damme\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/13.jpg\" alt=\"Van Damme\" width=\"544\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Jean-Claude Van Damme is GR44 is Private Luc Deveraux<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As I mentioned above, this one isn&#8217;t too much of a stretch for the Muscles From Brussels, but somebody had to play the straight man here and he does a fine job.\u00a0 Van Damme can fight and look good doing it, which is all that really matters.\u00a0 As for the character himself, he&#8217;s determined and hardy.\u00a0 A level-headed farmboy, he still manages to take out Dolph twice.\u00a0 So yeah, I&#8217;d say he&#8217;s a bad-ass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5260   aligncenter\" title=\"Lundgren\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/52.jpg\" alt=\"Lundgren\" width=\"544\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Dolph Lundgren is GR13 is Sergeant Andrew Scott<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sgt. Scott is one mean hombre.\u00a0 After killing his unit in Vietnam, he slices off the ears of every one of them, making a gory necklace for himself.\u00a0 Absolutely convinced he&#8217;s still in the war, he&#8217;s having the time of his life.\u00a0 Facing the horror and trauma that comes with war, he embraces it, become madness and war itself.\u00a0 Not too sure if you can call it bad-ass, but he&#8217;s so fucking crazy and yet so dangerous you might as well let him have the title.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE BODY COUNT: 40]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While the movie starts with the aftermath of a grisly killing spree by Lundgren, most of the violence featured in Universal Soldier is fairly light.\u00a0 We do get squib hits and broken necks, but nothing too obscene.\u00a0 Still Dolph comes out on top with 18, while Van Damme ends the movie with 11.\u00a0 Both sets of kills can be viewed <a title=\"Universal Soldier killcount\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=301\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5261   aligncenter\" title=\"Let the bodies hit the... oh.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/32.jpg\" alt=\"Let the bodies hit the... oh.\" width=\"544\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other than that, we are frequently shown the after effect of killings, with bodies strewn here and there.\u00a0 All in all, more corpses than it at first seems.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[MOST SATISFYING ASS-KICKING &amp; DEATH]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The end fight, of course!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5257   aligncenter\" title=\"Gotcha!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/92.jpg\" alt=\"Gotcha!\" width=\"544\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally blending Van Damme&#8217;s impressive acrobatics with Dolph&#8217;s power, we get to see two Action legends bust heads like the super soldiers they are.\u00a0 We get impossibly powerful punches, guys thrown through walls, helicopter kicks, violence and drama!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5258   aligncenter\" title=\"Helicopter Kick\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/112.jpg\" alt=\"Helicopter Kick\" width=\"542\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is one of Action cinema&#8217;s best, if only to see these guys go at it.\u00a0 And damn is it worth it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5278   aligncenter\" title=\"You want DudeSweat?  You got it!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Ass.jpg\" alt=\"You want DudeSweat?  You got it!\" width=\"544\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While one could certainly read heavily into the rivalry of our two primary characters, the fact of the matter is they&#8217;ve essentially been turned into human robots.\u00a0 They show no connection with people in so far as either pain or love are concerned until near the end of the film, and as such they are clearly without sexual wants or needs.\u00a0 Van Damme gets groped by the female lead and doesn&#8217;t even flinch, and Lundgren spends the movie so far off his rocker and in war mode he hasn&#8217;t time for such matters.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The character of Veronica Roberts, played by Ally Walker, is one of the most grating female add-ons I have ever had to bear.\u00a0 A chain-smoking, raspy-voiced reporter always trying to get &#8220;the big story&#8221;, she comes very near to undermining a lot of the fun.\u00a0 Still, she puts a bit of heart to the zaniness and plays as our lead-in to the goofy shenanigans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5265   aligncenter\" title=\"Ally Walker\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/41.jpg\" alt=\"Ally Walker\" width=\"542\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But she still ends up getting captured and used against our hero.\u00a0 Times may be changing, but they haven&#8217;t changed yet.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EPIC MOMENT AND BEST ONE-LINER]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">EP-M:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While the bus chase sequence is thrilling, and the hotel escape exciting, I&#8217;d have to go with the supermarket scene for this one&#8217;s epic moment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5266   aligncenter\" title=\"&quot;I kick ass!&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/62.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;I kick ass!&quot;\" width=\"544\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the super soldiers&#8217; transport vehicle damaged and Sgt. Scott the only one of those left regaining his sense of self, Scott is going absolutely nuts.\u00a0 He and the remaining surviving soldiers storm into a local supermarket looking for ice and supplies.\u00a0 Screaming about how his whole platoon is almost wiped out, he begins ranting out loud about the traitors amongst his ranks and the ever-presence of &#8220;Charlie.&#8221;\u00a0 All of this to the horror and bewilderment of the supermarket&#8217;s patrons.\u00a0 Four police officers attempt to subdue the raving Sgt.
