{"id":4001,"date":"2009-12-23T14:43:28","date_gmt":"2009-12-23T21:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=4001"},"modified":"2009-12-23T14:43:28","modified_gmt":"2009-12-23T21:43:28","slug":"the-unfrightenable-connery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/new-home\/the-unfrightenable-connery\/","title":{"rendered":"The Unfrightenable Connery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4003   aligncenter\" title=\"tfcposter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/tfcposter.jpg\" alt=\"tfcposter\" width=\"383\" height=\"585\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE CHALK-OUTLINE]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Frightened City (1961): Breakdown by Kain424<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A mob enforcer learns that crime doesn&#8217;t pay when his cohorts betray him.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE EXECUTION]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Frightened City<\/strong> is an undiscovered gem of a film.\u00a0 Filmed in Britain, and before its star would go on, a year later, to assist in the creation of the modern Action flick, it is still full of witty dialog, clever characterization, and classy acting.\u00a0 Also of note is the music, written by Norrie Paramour, which almost has a Morricone feel.\u00a0 Connery, who was a minor character in <a title=\"Action Of The Tiger (1957)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=2534\" target=\"_self\">Action Of The Tiger<\/a>, shares the screen with other actors from the same film including Herbert Lom (who played Trifon) and Yvonne Romain, who is now a leading lady.\u00a0 On an interesting side-note, Romain&#8217;s husband, Leslie Bricusse, wrote the lyrics for the theme songs in <a title=\"Goldfinger (1964)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1339\" target=\"_self\">Goldfinger<\/a> and <a title=\"You Only Live Twice (1967)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=3575\" target=\"_self\">You Only Live Twice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4004   aligncenter\" title=\"That's a big-ass Sword\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/F5.jpg\" alt=\"That's a big-ass Sword\" width=\"460\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The story is a complex one following three main characters.\u00a0 The first is an accountant\/adviser and part-time money launderer who discreetly takes over a mob syndicate, uniting multiple gangs under one banner.\u00a0 The second story follows a mob enforcer put in charge of collecting protection fees and providing the newly paid-for protection.\u00a0 The final story, the throughline for the whole film, is about a hard-working Scotland yard detective trying to uncover the whole racket and bring it down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4006   aligncenter\" title=\"Mob Friends\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/F3.jpg\" alt=\"Mob Friends\" width=\"456\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a distinct political message running throughout.\u00a0 One lamenting search procedures and the rights of suspects.\u00a0 In the next decade, an entire genre would spring out of such concerns (notably starting with <a title=\"Dirty Harry (1971)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1272\" target=\"_self\">Dirty Harry<\/a>).\u00a0 Strangely, the police never act on their discontent, preferring to stay, against all adversity, on the right side of the law. Pussies. This gives them plenty of time to bathe in the spotlight of heroism, and despite the sympathy inherent in Connery&#8217;s story, it&#8217;s the police the film ultimately sides with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Frightened City<\/strong> remains a movie that refuses to be easily categorized.\u00a0 Our film&#8217;s hero is a former thief and convict, only working for the mob to pay for his brother&#8217;s disability.\u00a0 He has a code of honor he follows at all times, usually in non-violent fashion.\u00a0 Still, we get to see his character get tainted from the company he keeps and lose his way in all his success.\u00a0 The tale of gray morality makes the movie unique for its time.\u00a0 And though the Action isn&#8217;t heavy and the film will forever be dated by it&#8217;s style, it&#8217;s still a pretty decent thriller.\u00a0 If you can find it, check it out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[HOW BAD-ASS ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS?]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4005   aligncenter\" title=\"Sean Connery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Sean-Connery.jpg\" alt=\"Sean Connery\" width=\"460\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Sean Connery is Patrick &#8220;Paddy&#8221; Damion<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Tough but intelligent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Connery plays the part with a natural ease, especially with the ladies.\u00a0 The previously mentioned mob enforcer, he&#8217;s hard-edged, but there is an intelligence about him that&#8217;s difficult to deny.\u00a0 His character is easily likable and at once sympathetic.\u00a0 Connery&#8217;s portrayal assists in this endeavor and is most effective.\u00a0 We get to see him use his physicality a lot here, looming over most other people and climbing buildings.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, once the guy becomes powerful, he sort of becomes a douche.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4007   aligncenter\" title=\"Herbert Lom\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Herbert-Lom.jpg\" alt=\"Herbert Lom\" width=\"460\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Herbert Lom is Waldo Zhernikov<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of ease, this guy manages a level of cool I didn&#8217;t think was possible, especially after seeing him in <a title=\"Action Of The Tiger (1957)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=2534\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Action Of The Tiger<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 A testament to Lom&#8217;s ability as an actor, Zhernikov is the polar opposite of Trifon, being a calm, calculating manipulator.\u00a0 He is the man behind the curtain, a self-assured con-man with a room full of antique armor and an expensive cigarette in his hand.\u00a0 Zhernikov is the smartest man in the room, and he knows it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4008   aligncenter\" title=\"John Gregson\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/John-Gregson.jpg\" alt=\"John Gregson\" width=\"460\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>John Gregson is Detective Sayers<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sayers is the film&#8217;s heart and also its comic relief.\u00a0 He gets almost all the best lines, preferring large wordy dialogues about the futile attempts for justice and means of getting there.\u00a0 He has a self-deprecating sense of humor that keeps him from losing his cool, but when he finally does he makes you feel his frustration.\u00a0 If Connery weren&#8217;t in the film, this guy would&#8217;ve been the one to watch.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE BODY COUNT: 3, Maybe More]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite the movie containing guns, grenades, and guys with axes and knives, I could only confirm three actual kills.\u00a0 One poor, unnamed man gets run down by an automobile as the film opens while another is shot to death in a gym&#8217;s changing room.\u00a0 There were scenes of violent beatdowns (mostly occurring offscreen), but I couldn&#8217;t tell if they resulted in deaths.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[MOST SATISFYING ASS-KICKING &amp; DEATH]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Damion vs. Foulcher and Zhernikov<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Connery fights the film&#8217;s two primary villains at once, using fists and furniture.\u00a0 Far more athletic than his foes, Connery basically beats them both into submission before Foulcher gets hold of a morning star on display in Zhernikov&#8217;s showroom.\u00a0 He then goes on the offensive, swinging wildly while insulting Damion and moving toward a gun.\u00a0 That is, until Damion kicks a desk into him, sending Foulcher back into a wall, pinning him onto a spiked shield on display.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4009   aligncenter\" title=\"Dead Foulcher\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/F7.jpg\" alt=\"Dead Foulcher\" width=\"460\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think he got the point.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is a dance instructor who seems pretty effeminate, but it&#8217;s never said for sure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4010   aligncenter\" title=\"Wanna roll around on the mat some more?\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/F4.jpg\" alt=\"Wanna roll around on the mat some more?\" width=\"460\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, I would like to point out that Connery&#8217;s character spends his spare time in a gym practicing Judo, while sweaty men lift weights and stare.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty ghey if you ask me.\u00a0 Oh, and the main villain&#8217;s name is Waldo.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Sex is a wonderful thing for business.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4011     aligncenter\" title=\"Hellooooooo, ladies!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/F2.jpg\" alt=\"Hellooooooo, ladies!\" width=\"460\" height=\"262\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Flappers!<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Zhernikov holds his meetings down at a club which is essentially a titty-bar for upper class Englishmen.\u00a0 There are subtle hints throughout the film that there is a bit of prostitution going on behind the scenes, but no one ever comes right out and says it.<\/p>\n<p>But by far the worst crime committed against a woman in this film is something Sean does to his girlfriend character.\u00a0 After becoming somewhat enamored with Yvonne Romain&#8217;s character of Anya, he still has his girlfriend set up a Christmas party at his pad.\u00a0 She cooks all the food and likely sets up the decorations as well.\u00a0 During the party, he completely ignores her and ends up banging Anya.\u00a0 Super douche!<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EPIC MOMENT AND BEST ONE-LINER]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The film&#8217;s epic moment occurs after Paddy Damion is hired to run the ground operations for Zhernikov&#8217;s mob syndicate.\u00a0 In a montage sequence similar to that of the &#8220;<em>Push It To The Limit<\/em>&#8221;
