Waters<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That&#8217;s seriously his name.\u00a0 A.K., like the gun.\u00a0 Anyhow, Bruce does the blue collar thing, but this is mostly something of a ruse, as the character gets a lot less mercenary pretty early on.\u00a0 Honestly, it&#8217;s one of the guy&#8217;s better roles.\u00a0 Willis keeps the film grounded, giving a truly solid performance, and letting the make-up and scenery do most of the work for him.\u00a0 He let&#8217;s Bellucci slap him pretty hard across the face with nary a reaction, but it works for the character, who isn&#8217;t supposed to be nearly as hard-assed as his name would suggest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17583\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Monica-1.jpg\" alt=\"Monica\" width=\"425\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Monica-1.jpg 425w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Monica-1-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Monica Belucci<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">as Dr. Lena Fiore Kendricks<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>She&#8217;s a doctor, so she cares.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a woman, so she cries.\u00a0 Bellucci does what she can with the material, but most of her contributions merely add up to, &#8220;These people need rest!&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;d complain, but the script doesn&#8217;t really go anywhere else to give her much more to work with.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17584\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SEALs-1.jpg\" alt=\"SEALs\" width=\"520\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SEALs-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SEALs-1-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">The SEALs<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A bunch of bad-asses.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to praise theses actors enough for the little touches they bring to the movie.\u00a0 Nick Chinlund and Cole Hauser are suitably rugged, but I think the standout of the team has got to be Eamonn Walker, who gives the movie a lot of gravitas and the team its soul.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">THE BAD GUYS:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17585\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Rebels-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rebels\" width=\"520\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Rebels-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Rebels-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian rebels.\u00a0 While mostly a faceless force of combatants, a la Assault On Precinct 13, we do get some especially good work from martial artist Peter Mensah as the de facto leader of the pursuing rebels.\u00a0 Mensah (who was certifiably awesome in <strong>Jason X<\/strong>) uses his greyhound-like features prominently here to good effect, becoming almost like a slasher villain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17586\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Terwase-1.jpg\" alt=\"Terwase\" width=\"520\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Terwase-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Terwase-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not a lot of depth is given to the rebels, unfortunately.\u00a0 Or maybe it&#8217;s fortunate.\u00a0 The political reasons for their uprising and subsequent sadistic hunting down and killing of their foes is summed up as &#8220;cultural differences&#8221; and not much else is said.\u00a0 We know they are apparently Islamic, but mostly that they are anti-Christian.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE SEX AND VIOLENCE]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure the movie is intentionally sexist, but the film does not paint women as especially capable.\u00a0 Monica Bellucci comes across nurturing but stern about her patients.\u00a0 She is especially emotional towards the suffering of others, though I wouldn&#8217;t call that a weakness&#8230; or a strength.\u00a0 But here&#8217;s the thing.\u00a0 When the women of <strong>Tears Of The Sun<\/strong> aren&#8217;t fleeing from danger or cowering in fear, they are literally getting their tits cut off.\u00a0 That alone leaves me a bit sour on some of this film.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17589\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Just-bodies-1.jpg\" alt=\"Just bodies\" width=\"520\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Just-bodies-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Just-bodies-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">MURDER BY NUMBERS: [~160]<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are so many deaths in this movie.\u00a0 Like soooooo many.\u00a0 In a trick <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/?p=1269\" target=\"_blank\">Rambo<\/a><\/strong> would use to about the same effect a few years later, <strong>Tears Of The Sun<\/strong> opens with footage of what appears to be actual acts of bloody violence to set the tone.\u00a0 That being said, there are shots of bodies upon bodies, making it hard to gauge just how many people die in this one.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/?p=270\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Willis claims 15<\/a> of these kills, but is hardly the most lethal force of the film.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE BEST OF THE REST]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">BEST FIGHT:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17587\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cole-Hauser-looking-awesome-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cole Hauser looking awesome\" width=\"520\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cole-Hauser-looking-awesome-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Cole-Hauser-looking-awesome-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The final push toward the Cameroon border is undoubtedly the most dynamic of the gunfights of the film, featuring the SEALs working together as a team.\u00a0 Whether its their initial push forward, walking Commando-style directly at the attacking horde, or their phalanx-like tactics as they guard the rear of the fleeing patients, the final battle is a well-choreographed piece of cinematic flair.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">BEST LINE:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As the movie was produced by Willis&#8217;s own Cheyenne Production company, it&#8217;s just as expected we get some hardline right-wing philosophy jammed into the plot.\u00a0 After rubbing the doctor&#8217;s nose in the fact her colleagues back at a missionary were all slaughtered (as well as all of the patients being treated there), Willis makes her look him in the eye and says, &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Take responsibility for the choice you made.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fucking cold.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE EXECUTION]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Credit must be given to the film makers in 2003 for making such a humorless, stone-faced film.\u00a0 The environments are dark, the actors as serious as it gets, and the tone is bleak.\u00a0 That being said, <strong>Tears Of The Sun<\/strong> is, for the most part, a grand epic war film, the likes of which I haven&#8217;t seen for years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17590\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Freedom-is-hard-1.jpg\" alt=\"Freedom is hard\" width=\"520\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Freedom-is-hard-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Freedom-is-hard-1-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Released just in time to coincide with the United States&#8217; invasion of Iraq in 2003, this is a modern equivalent to a John Wayne film.\u00a0 Think <strong>The Green Berets<\/strong>, which saw Wayne basically arguing for the United States&#8217; intervention in Vietnam.\u00a0 This is fellow right-winger Bruce Willis putting forth the nation that not only is America the right country to police the world, but we are willing to bend the rules to do it right.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Willis plays Lt. A.K. Waters (seriously), a blue collar Navy SEAL leader who just wants to get the job done.\u00a0 He&#8217;s not in it for the politics or the philosophy, but when he sees lethal devastation in front of him (and a little screaming guilt from our heroine), he barely pauses before plunging himself and his men fully into a high risk situation to save the day.\u00a0 America will do the right thing when confronted with evil.\u00a0 They will die fighting for freedom, regardless of whose it is.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17588\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Firing-freedom-bullets-1.jpg\" alt=\"Firing freedom bullets\" width=\"520\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Firing-freedom-bullets-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Firing-freedom-bullets-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It seems a bit like subtext at first, maybe a little too well hidden.\u00a0 But that is smashed away when two characters have a full-on conversation wherein it&#8217;s damn near said that slavery saved many Africans from the horrors of the civil strife on that continent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Musa<\/span>: Where are your ancestors from?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Silk<\/span>: South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Musa<\/span>: In Africa. Where in Africa?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Silk<\/span>: How the hell should I know?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Musa<\/span>: You are from here. This part of Africa. Your nose&#8230; eyes. Like mine.\u00a0 <strong>You know, if it wasn&#8217;t for slavery, you might still be living here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an absolutely jaw-dropping moment in the film, presented almost as an aside.\u00a0 Later in the movie, Eamonn Walker&#8217;s Zee tells Willis, &#8220;Those Africans are my people, too.&#8221;\u00a0 Bruce looks this black man cold in the eyes and fist pounds him.\u00a0 &#8220;For our sins,&#8221; he says in that gruff little Bruno whisper.\u00a0 Slavery forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>So again, if the film weren&#8217;t playing every moment so poker-faced, it would be absolutely ridiculous.\u00a0 Hell, it still is ridiculous.\u00a0 But somehow it works.\u00a0 Kudos to <strong>Training Day<\/strong> director Antoine Fuqua for pulling it off.\u00a0 Fuqua, who got his start in Hollywood attempting to ape other action directors like John Woo with <strong>The Replacement Killers<\/strong>, pulls off a minor miracle here by making such a dour, rain-soaked nightmare an immensely watchable movie.\u00a0 And while the ending of <strong>Tears Of The Sun<\/strong> quickly devolves into Michael Bay-like military porn, and the political subtext of the film may leave something to be desired, it&#8217;s still a great piece of nearly-forgotten cinema, unfairly maligned at the time of its release.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">__<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17576 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Now-thats-what-Im-talking-about-1.jpg\" alt=\"Now that's what I'm talking about\" width=\"520\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Now-thats-what-Im-talking-about-1.jpg 720w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Now-thats-what-Im-talking-about-1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an action film, the movie works well, ratching up the tension before a gunfight and then letting things get intense during.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how accurate the tactics used by Willis and his fellow SEALs are, but it seems pretty convincing to me.\u00a0 It never quite reaches the insane heights of something like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/?p=7470\" target=\"_blank\">Predator<\/a><\/strong>, but it does match the realistic tone of something like <strong>We Were Soldiers<\/strong>, and the violence levels place it a bit under Rambo for realism&#8217;s sake.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a healthy balance that allows for you to grow fond of the team, while still worrying about whether or not they&#8217;ll make it out alive.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE MORAL OF THE STORY]<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17573\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Americas-Motto-1.jpg\" alt=\"America's Motto\" width=\"560\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Americas-Motto-1.jpg 713w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Americas-Motto-1-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE AOBG ACTION CHECKLIST]<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h3><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>[\u00a0 ] Athlete(s) Turned \u201cActor\u201d<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Clinging To The Outside Of A Moving Vehicle<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Crotch Attack<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Dialogue Telling Us How Bad-Ass The Main Character(s) Is\/Are<br \/>\n[X] Ending Featuring An Ambulance, A Blanket or A Towel<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Factory\/Warehouse\/Castle<br \/>\n[X] Giant Explosion(s)<br \/>\n[X] Heavy Artillery<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Improvised Weapon(s)<br \/>\n[X] Macho Mode(s) Of Transportation<br \/>\n[X] Main Character Sports Facial Accessory(s)<br \/>\n[X] Manly Embrace(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Notorious Stunt-Man Sighting<br \/>\n[X] Passage(s) Of Time Via Montage<br \/>\n[X] Politically Fueled Plot Point(s)<br \/>\n[X] Senseless Destruction Of Property<br \/>\n[X] Shoot Out(s) and\/or Sword Fight(s)<br \/>\n[X] Slow-Motion Finishing Move(s)\/Death(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Stupid Authoritative Figure(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Substance Usage and\/or Abuse<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Tis The Season<br \/>\n[X] Torture Sequence(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Unnecessary Sequel<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Vehicle Chase(s)<br \/>\n[X] Vigilante Justice<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><strong>[TOTAL: 18 outta 25]<\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 120px;
