or &#8220;Change-bots.&#8221;\u00a0 <strong>Transmorphers<\/strong> is sure to get plenty of hits just from those people alone.\u00a0 Add to that the fact these studios are only making and remaking these kinds of nonsense films because of what they perceive as some kind of name recognition factor, and The Asylum&#8217;s business model almost smacks of a certain kind of brilliance.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, the film fan and quality control part of my brain knows this is a special kind of evil.\u00a0 I accept that.\u00a0 But the schadenfreude I feel here is too strong.\u00a0 So when I heard The Asylum was making a version of <a title=\"The Expendables (2010)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/?p=9863\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">The Expendables<\/a>, I was fairly pleased.\u00a0 Here they were making one of these knock-offs of a film I actually enjoyed, albeit about four years too late.\u00a0 It turns out, however, this film is more to do with the ongoing concept of an <strong>Expendables<\/strong> spin-off, featuring a cast of entirely female Expendable characters, currently going under the title <strong>The Expendabelles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sit-rep-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16667   aligncenter\" title=\"Sit-rep\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sit-rep-1-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"Sit-rep\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mercenaries concerns the attempts of a group of four female convicts hired by the C.I.A. to rescue the President&#8217;s kidnapped daughter in exchange for full pardons of their past crimes.\u00a0 Women kicking ass ensues.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE HEROES]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16670   aligncenter\" title=\"Bell\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Bell-1-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"Bell\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Zo\u00eb Bell is Cassandra Clay<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Zo\u00eb Bell is one of those women who really deserve better than she&#8217;s gotten as far as headlining a movie.\u00a0 She&#8217;s got a gruff physicality that easily lends credence to playing tough types and a certain amount of grace and vulnerability that would make for an interesting lead.\u00a0 While Bell&#8217;s character here isn&#8217;t the deepest of written characters, she is the deepest of this particular film, and when allowed to soar (even through this movie&#8217;s miniscule budget), Bell makes it work.\u00a0 Ditching her natural New Zealand accent, Zo\u00eb becomes the group&#8217;s de facto leader, a hard and resourceful woman, strong and sarcastic, with excellent fighting skills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16672   aligncenter\" title=\"Lokken\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"Lokken\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Lokken-1.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Kristanna Loken is Katherine &#8220;Kat&#8221; Morgan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Loken will likely always be remembered as the T-X from <a title=\"Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (2003)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/?p=3055\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Terminator 2: Rise Of The Machines<\/a>, and that&#8217;s kind of too bad because she&#8217;s a good presence and works well in an Action setting.\u00a0 Though this role is largely a waste of her talents, I&#8217;d say it does benefit the film to have her piercing gaze.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fun to have someone as expressive as Loken play the team sniper and resident tough member.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mei-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16673   aligncenter\" title=\"Mei\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mei-1-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"Mei\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Nicole Bilderback is Mei-Lin Fong<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bilderback plays the team&#8217;s explosives expert and token Asian team member.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t say I know Nicole Bilderback from much else, and she&#8217;s nearly a non-presence here, but does what she can.\u00a0 She&#8217;s far more jokey than any of the other team members, and gets some truly cringeworthy dialog.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Fox-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16674   aligncenter\" title=\"Fox\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Fox-2-1-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"Fox\" width=\"491\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Vivica A. Fox is Donna &#8220;Raven&#8221; Ravena<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Fox here does well in the sort of genre film she was born to be in.\u00a0 Like her character in <strong>Kill Bill<\/strong>, Fox is a former hitwoman, as lethal with your back facing her or away from her.\u00a0 Fox seems to be having fun here, and if this is really an <strong>Expendables<\/strong> mockbuster, then she is <strong>Mercenaries<\/strong>&#8216;s Dolph Lundgren.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16675   aligncenter\" title=\"Mona\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"Mona\" width=\"491\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Mona-1.jpg 1065w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Cynthia Rothrock is Mona<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ah, it&#8217;s always nice to see Rothrock pop up in these kinds of flicks, even if she&#8217;s still dying her hair in a million different colors.\u00a0 She&#8217;s never had the best or strongest presence, but Cynthia&#8217;s more than earned her pedigree.\u00a0 I might not believe her character is the ass-kicking C.I.A. chief she plays, but I definitely know and believe Rothrock is a bad-ass.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE HEAVIES]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16676   aligncenter\" title=\"Amazonian She-bitch\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"Amazonian She-bitch\" width=\"491\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1-1024x573.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Amazonian-She-bitch-1.jpg 1065w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Brigitte Nielsen is Ulrika<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I really don&#8217;t know what to say about Brigitte Nielsen.\u00a0 I mean, have any of you seen <strong>Flava Of Love<\/strong>?\u00a0 So I&#8217;m just going to try and talk a bit about Ulrika.\u00a0 Rothrock&#8217;s character refers to her as an &#8220;Amazonian she-bitch&#8221;, and that&#8217;s about as apt a description as any.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a man-hating, woman-eating monster of a character.\u00a0 Ulrika&#8217;s as close to making this movie feel like the film it wants to be, too.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t tell if it&#8217;s because Nielsen&#8217;s picked up some key acting pointers over the course of her career, or if it&#8217;s because Brigitte&#8217;s become some sort of &#8220;it&#8221; creature, almost unreal, and so fiercely unapolotic enough that it translates to the screen.\u00a0 She&#8217;s genuinely scary, and feels like a real threat, something her lackeys are all seriously&#8230; um, lacking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16677   aligncenter\" title=\"Grigori\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"Grigori\" width=\"491\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1-1024x573.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Grigori-1.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Tim Abell is Grigori Babishkova<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>He&#8217;s Ulrika&#8217;s right hand weirdo, a mass rapist and all around filthy pile of two-legged scum.\u00a0 The film helpfully fills out his backstory with this slide.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE  SEX AND VIOLENCE]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Free to make their films without fear of censorship, The Asylum have the power to make some of the most truly violent and sexualized flicks ever made.\u00a0 I mean, they put a lesbian subplot in their <strong>Transformers<\/strong> knock-off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16678   aligncenter\" title=\"The Closest You're Gonna Get In This Movie\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"The Closest You're Gonna Get In This Movie\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1-1024x570.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Misogony-1.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I am astounded at no just how little death there is in <strong>Mercenaries<\/strong>, but how this movie completely dodges most films of this type&#8217;s innate urge to exploit the female aspect.\u00a0 No shower scenes?\u00a0 No shirtless fights in the mud?\u00a0 The Hell, you say!\u00a0 But it&#8217;s true.\u00a0 This is, perhaps by accident, one of the most progressive Action films I&#8217;ve ever seen.\u00a0 It even passes the Bechdel test.\u00a0 The shot above is about as close as you&#8217;ll get, wherein Kristanna Loken feigns asking Vivica A. Fox for help undoing her bra, a scene that&#8217;s (painfully) played for laughs.<\/p>\n<p>Still, we get plenty of bloodshed when people get shot.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t squelch on squibs (though there are also some awful CGI blood bits).<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE  BEST OF THE REST]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mercenarie<\/strong>s is confounding at times.\u00a0 It&#8217;s less <strong>Charlie&#8217;s Angels<\/strong> than it is <strong>The Dirty Dozen<\/strong>, but definitely of less quality than either.\u00a0 I might prefer to watch this over either of the McG-directed <strong>Charlie&#8217;s Angels<\/strong> films, but that&#8217;s really not saying much.\u00a0 But in this cheap and often bland experience, we do get some good things for our time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16679   aligncenter\" title=\"Rothrock\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1-1024x569.jpg\" alt=\"Rothrock\" width=\"491\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Rothrock-1.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cynthia Rothrock fights Vivica A. Fox.\u00a0 No, it&#8217;s nowhere near as good as the Bride\/Vernita Green fight from <strong>Kill Bill<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s a nice reminder that Cynthia&#8217;s still got it.\u00a0 Plus, when you think of this movie in <strong>Expendables <\/strong>knock-off terms, you&#8217;ll soon realize Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger didn&#8217;t do much of anything in their short cameos in that film.\u00a0 Cynthia&#8217;s got the boys beat in that area.\u00a0 Ball&#8217;s in your court, <strong>Expendabelles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also worthy of note is a great shooting-while falling bit from Zo\u00eb Bell, who also gets another bad-ass moment of her own.\u00a0 After battling about a dozen guys in some intense slow-motion hand-to-hand combat, a huge dude with a machine gun in both hands steps into frame, screaming maniacally.\u00a0 Zo\u00eb, nearly out of breath from fighting the others, says,<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;You&#8217;re kidding me!&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Fightend-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16681   aligncenter\" title=\"Fightend\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Fightend-1-1024x569.jpg\" alt=\"Fightend\" width=\"491\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And blows his brains out in a single shot.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE  EXECUTION]<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Look, no one is going into any movie from The Asylum with expectations of high art.\u00a0 That <strong>Mercenaries<\/strong> is watchable on a basic level is an achievement, let alone any kind of enjoyable.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll say it: I kind of liked it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16682   aligncenter\" title=\"Cheapness\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1-1024x571.jpg\" alt=\"Cheapness\" width=\"491\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Cheapness-1.jpg 1065w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, it is as cheap-looking and completely lacking in any kind of style as you would expect, but it delivers exactly what it advertises.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a silly little Action movie that happens to be about women bad-asses fighting a crazy woman warlord.\u00a0 It&#8217;s generic, but it works.\u00a0 And quite honestly, I think the guys over at The Asylum should be proud of what they&#8217;ve accomplished here.\u00a0 Had they gave it a little more polish, and maybe a bit more of a budget, it really could have been something awesome and memorable.\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t like looking at movies for what they&#8217;re not.\u00a0 Not really.<\/p>\n<p>At times, <strong>Mercenaries<\/strong> feels like it&#8217;s truly attempting to reach beyond its limited scale.\u00a0 There&#8217;s an entire fight sequence set in the back of a cargo plane and a crash landing.\u00a0 In a big budget film, the CGI used here would be jarring, but it doesn&#8217;t phase me here.\u00a0 Instead, I was kind of surprised they bothered using any computer graphics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16683   aligncenter\" title=\"Comic book style\" src=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1-1024x569.jpg\" alt=\"Comic book style\" width=\"491\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Comic-book-style-1.jpg 1065w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In between scenes, they occasionally change the color tone to sepia, and go into a comic book style, using panels and everything.\u00a0 The pictures are random and the effect is a bit forced, but I&#8217;m glad to see the creators had some ambition here.\u00a0 During Zo\u00eb Bell&#8217;s standalone one versus man fight sequence, there is a lot of slow motion intermingled with quick cuts that almost feels like the editor knew what
