{"id":1331,"date":"2009-08-21T10:53:48","date_gmt":"2009-08-21T16:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1331"},"modified":"2009-08-21T10:53:48","modified_gmt":"2009-08-21T16:53:48","slug":"the-karate-22-year-old","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/new-home\/the-karate-22-year-old\/","title":{"rendered":"The Karate 22 Year-Old"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate10.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE CHALK-OUTLINE]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Karate Kid (1984): Breakdown by Kain424<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Weakling learns the Karate Way to save himself from bullying.\u00a0 America becomes obsessed with martial arts.<\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE EXECUTION]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ah, the 80s.\u00a0 We saw the perfection of the police procedural film, the emergence of Hong Kong&#8217;s heroic bloodshed movies, the 80s Action hero, and the revival of martial arts films.\u00a0 And in that final category, perhaps no other film was as influential as 1984&#8217;s <strong>The Karate Kid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The director of <strong>Rocky<\/strong>, John Avildsen, doesn&#8217;t stray too far from the familiar, creating a story with parallel themes and moments.\u00a0 Ralph Macchio (who was 22 at the time) plays a teenage underdog who, with the help of an older mentor, overcomes the odds to uh, become good at fighting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s essentially a feel-good sports story with a love interest thrown into the mix.\u00a0 Like <strong>Rocky<\/strong>.\u00a0 And those aren&#8217;t the only connections.\u00a0 The film&#8217;s soundtrack features the Joe Esposito classic, <em>You&#8217;re The Best Around<\/em>, which was rejected from the <strong>Rocky III <\/strong>soundtrack in favor of <em>Eye Of The Tiger<\/em>.\u00a0 Coincidence?\u00a0 Probably not.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the film plays out in a fashion that&#8217;s become all too typical: kid moves into a new town, is interested in a girl, gets his ass handed to him by the local jock\/bully who also is interested in said girl, kid trains with old master, gets awesome through the power of the montage, wins the day.\u00a0 Cliche, classic, and fun.\u00a0 The only real reason to watch this film is for nostalgia&#8217;s sake or if you&#8217;re on an Action pilgrimage and want to see some of the humble origins of America&#8217;s fascination with martial arts.<\/p>\n<p>Humble it is, and you could probably have a legitimate argument about whether or not this film even belongs on this website&#8217;s list of Action films.\u00a0 Still, enough movies have copied the formula (<a title=\"No Retreat No Surrender (1986)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1114\" target=\"_self\">No Retreat No Surrender<\/a>, <a title=\"Never Back Down (2008)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=989\" target=\"_self\">Never Back Down<\/a>, <strong>Sidekicks<\/strong> etc.) to more than warrant it being added to our roster. Don&#8217;t expect much in the way of impressive choreography, with Pat Johnson being responsible for it.\u00a0 This is the guy that hampered <strong>Jackie Chan<\/strong>&#8216;s style in <a title=\"The Big Brawl (1980)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1300\" target=\"_self\">The Big Brawl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d say to check this one out, but don&#8217;t expect pure greatness.\u00a0 Still, underneath all the cliches and 80s-era dialog, this is a pretty decent movie and an American classic.\u00a0 But best of all, it features an over-the-top performance from <strong>Martin Kove<\/strong> (<strong>Death Race 2000<\/strong>, <a title=\"Rambo: First Blood part II (1985)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1015\" target=\"_self\">Rambo: First Blood Part II<\/a>), who&#8217;s like an evil <strong>David Hasselhoff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[HOW BAD-ASS ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS?]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ralph Macchio<\/strong> is Daniel &#8216;Daniel-san&#8217; Larusso<\/h3>\n<p>Macchio plays the character as a very extroverted Italian kid from the &#8220;big city.&#8221;\u00a0 This can either make you love him or hate him.\u00a0 Through his constant complaining and seeming ignorance, he makes Anakin Skywalker look almost optimistic at times.\u00a0 Still, he&#8217;s got a knack for pushing himself to the limit, and the guts to go with it (yeah, Elisabeth Shue is way out of his league, but his confidence is totally enough to seal the deal).\u00a0 He may not have the strongest body, but his ambition more than makes up for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pat Morita<\/strong> is Mr. Miyagi<\/h3>\n<p>Originally going to be played by <strong>Mako<\/strong> and then even <strong>Toshiro Mifune<\/strong>, Morita is the man that made this role iconic.\u00a0 His serious style is never undermined by the pinch of humor Morita gives him, making him the most lovable lethal old mentor ever.\u00a0 Also, in his backstory, he served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, which went on to become the most highly decorated unit in the war.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s pretty bad-ass.\u00a0 Plus, he seems to have ancient Japanese magic in his hands.\u00a0 All he has to do is clap them together and the film&#8217;s soundtrack pretty much does the rest.<\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE BODY COUNT: ZERO]<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No one dies, but Ralph Macchio gets his ass beat pretty bad in several scenes.\u00a0 Some people can&#8217;t stand the guy, and it might just get you through the death drought.<\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[MOST SATISFYING ASS-KICKING]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The final fight in the 3rd act.\u00a0 Easy.\u00a0 At the end of a tournament, which started with a montage set to the tune of <em>You&#8217;re The Best Around<\/em>, and featuring such great lines as the memorable &#8220;Sweep the leg&#8221; and the awesome &#8220;Put him in a body bag! Yeah!&#8221;, how could I not choose it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate11.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hobbled, but still fighting, Daniel presses on against Johnny (William Zabke), the bully that&#8217;s tormented him through the entire film.\u00a0 For a simple karate tournament match, featuring torso and head hit-based points, the movie does a great job of making the moments tense. The fight comes to a conclusion with Daniel using the now-iconic Crane Kick. But best of all, it ends the way all movies should end: with a freeze frame.<\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen some people read into the relationship between Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi to a grotesque extent, but I just don&#8217;t get it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to ignore the fact that Miyagi rows little Daniel out to the middle of a lake and has him stand on one end of the boat in short shorts and practice his &#8220;form&#8221;. They may be soul-mates, but it&#8217;s purely spiritual love.\u00a0 Besides, this whole movie wouldn&#8217;t have even happened if Danny-boy hadn&#8217;t been chasing after <strong>Elisabeth Shue<\/strong>&#8216;s teenage ass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite puppy love being the sorry excuse for the protagonist&#8217;s struggle, women are not featured too prominently in this story.\u00a0 Daniel&#8217;s mother is seen a few times nagging at her son, but it&#8217;s nothing a real mother wouldn&#8217;t do.\u00a0 But don&#8217;t worry, the sequel&#8217;s got enough misogyny to help even things out.<\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EPIC MOMENT AND BEST ONE-LINER]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Karate Kid<\/strong>&#8216;s epic moment occurs when Daniel-san finally figures out that Mr. Miyagi had been teaching him karate all along, through hard labor and chores designed to build in and instill the movements through Daniel&#8217;s muscle memory.\u00a0 This brings us to the immortal one-liner Mr. Miyagi had used to produce said results:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;Wax on, wax off.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE MORAL OF THE STORY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Do your chores.\u00a0 You are secretly being taught life lessons and other awesome things like karate.<\/p>\n<h2><span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE CHECKLIST: 06 outta 25]<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>[\u00a0 ] Athlete(s) Turned \u201cActor\u201d<br \/>\n[X] Clinging To The Outside Of A Moving Vehicle*<br \/>\n[X] Crotch Attack<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Dialogue Telling Us How Bad-Ass The Main Character(s) Is\/Are<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Ending Featuring An Ambulance, A Blanket or A Towel<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Factory\/Warehouse<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Giant Explosion(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Heavy Artillery<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Improvised Weapon(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Macho Mode(s) Of Transportation<br \/>\n[X] Main Character Sports Facial Accessory(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Manly Embrace(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Notorious Stunt-Man Sighting<br \/>\n[X] Passage(s) Of Time Via Montage<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Politically Fueled Plot Point(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Senseless Destruction Of Property<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Shoot Out(s) and\/or Sword Fight(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Slow-Motion Finishing Move(s)\/Death(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Stupid Authoritative Figure(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Substance Usage and\/or Abuse<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Tis The Season<br \/>\n[X] Torture Sequence(s)**<br \/>\n[X] Unnecessary Sequel<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><strong> [The Karate Kid II]<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong> [\u00a0 ] Vehicle Chase(s)<br \/>\n[\u00a0 ] Vigilante Justice<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>*Johnny and his 80s dirtbike gang grab onto Daniel&#8217;s bicycle while their riding their motored bikes.\u00a0 They grag him along abit before throwing him down a hill.<\/p>\n<p>**Daniel-san gets his ass beat on the beach, and it&#8217;s no contest.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll call it torture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Karate7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">22, huh?\u00a0 22 is good age.\u00a0 Massage is next job.
