I dunno."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE CHALK-OUTLINE]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Protector (1985): Breakdown by Kain424<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A Chinese New York cop (yeah, I know) goes to Hong Kong (go figure) to rescue a millionairess and take down a drug cartel.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE EXECUTION]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After <a title=\"The Big Brawl (1980)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1300\" target=\"_self\">The Big Brawl<\/a> turned out to be less than the massive success they&#8217;d hoped it to be, Jackie Chan went back to Hong Kong and worked hard at maintaining his star image there.\u00a0 Five years later, they tried the American market again, and this is the result.\u00a0 Like the western version of <strong>Tom Yum Goong<\/strong>, I have no clue as to why it&#8217;s called <strong>The Protector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Things start wrong right off the bat, as Chan is introduced awkwardly trying to share a conversation in English with his partner.\u00a0 Chan is supposed to be a New York cop, but can hardly speak the language.\u00a0 Furthermore, the next few Action sequences involve more gunplay than anything resembling Jackie&#8217;s signature kung fu.\u00a0 And I have never seen someone fire a gun in a more awkward fashion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[flashvideo filename=videos\/Chanshoots.wmv.FLV \/]<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Jackie Chan and and director James Glickenhause (<strong>The Exterminator<\/strong>) did not get along at all during the shoot, with Glickenhaus wanting Chan to be more of a hard-boiled <a title=\"Dirty Harry (1971)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1272\" target=\"_self\">Dirty Harry<\/a>-type character, and Chan wanting to do more of his signature stuntwork and be more of a Chan-like character.\u00a0 A different stunt coordinator was hired and Chan was held at bay until shooting was completed.\u00a0 Jackie then re-shot a few fight scenes and you can find this version only in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>There are two versions: the American version with cussing, nudity, Engrish, and short fight scenes, and the Hong Kong version, with an added love story twist, more fluid fight scenes, but with no nudity, cussing and the languages all dubbed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty much lose\/lose.\u00a0 But the film does try a lot of cool things, and attempting to make an Asian action star is OK in my book.\u00a0 I think if Jackie had kept at it after <strong>The Big Brawl<\/strong>, he just might have gained an audience.\u00a0 Unfortunately, he wouldn&#8217;t see himself a star Stateside for another ten years.\u00a0 Oh well.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[HOW BAD-ASS IS THE MAIN CHARACTER?]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Jackie Chan<\/strong> is Detective Billy Wong<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite being more <a title=\"Die Hard (1988)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1029\" target=\"_self\">John McClane<\/a> than Harry Callahan, Billy Wong never really comes off as a bad-ass.\u00a0 He can hold his own in a fight, but he rarely seems to be able to bag his bad guys.\u00a0 He does, however, seem to prefer blowing them up to arresting them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE BODY COUNT: 16]<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is actually one of the more violent Jackie Chan films I have ever watched.\u00a0 When people are shot, they bleed a fucking ton!\u00a0 A whole lot of people are shot in this one, too.\u00a0 Jackie only kills seven, but several others die from gunshots, stab wounds, or being eviscerated in fiery explosions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[MOST SATISFYING ASS-KICKINGS &amp; DEATHS]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll have to go with the fight between Jackie Chan and Bill Wallace.\u00a0 They use their hands, feet, brass knuckles, and even a power saw!\u00a0 Oh, but it&#8217;s probably better in the Hong Kong version.\u00a0 See it if you can! Actually, here.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve edited the two versions together for your viewing pleasure.\u00a0 Enjoy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[flashvideo filename=videos\/ProtectorKain424Fight.wmv.FLV \/]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Protector rights held by Warner Bros. and Golden Harvest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When Jackie&#8217;s partner dies early on, Jackie flips out like he&#8217;d just lost his lover.\u00a0 During this scene it is also revealed that Jackie pees while holing his gun as well&#8230; not sure how to read into that, but I&#8217;ll keep it in this section.<\/p>\n<p>While Chan openly flirts with women in this film, he&#8217;s never that into it.\u00a0 He does, however, get very into splashing his new partner, played by Danny Aiello (The Professional), when they go to a bath house together.\u00a0 Aiello he goes further than you&#8217;d think, yanking a towel off an unsuspecting male passerby.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Protector8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the American version, women are seen as either untrustworthy bitches or damsels in distress.\u00a0 In the Hong Kong version, Jackie added a whole new character for him to rescue and treat like dirt.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty funny.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and did I mention that there&#8217;s a lot of nudity?<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EPIC MOMENT AND BEST ONE-LINER]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Jackie Says &#8220;Fuck&#8221;!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[flashvideo filename=videos\/Chankeys.wmv.FLV \/]<\/p>\n<p>The one-liner?\u00a0 The bad guy asks Jackie, who has a gun on him, &#8220;Are you threatening me, officer?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackie smiles and responds, <strong>&#8220;That&#8217;s not a threat.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a promise.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE MORAL OF THE STORY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re gonna set the movie in Hong Kong anyway, let Jackie do his own fight choreography.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE GIST OF JACKIE: 5 outta 5]<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><strong>[X] Breaks Into Someplace Or Escapes By Way Of Acrobatics<br \/>\n[X] Has An Annoying Tag-Along Companion<br \/>\n[X] Makes The &#8216;OW!&#8217;
