{"id":1277,"date":"2009-06-27T00:29:58","date_gmt":"2009-06-27T06:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=1277"},"modified":"2009-06-27T00:29:58","modified_gmt":"2009-06-27T06:29:58","slug":"the-retro-active-abortionator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allouttabubblegum.com\/new-home\/the-retro-active-abortionator\/","title":{"rendered":"The Retro-Active Abortionator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Terminator1.jpg\" alt=\"The Terminator\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE CHALK-OUTLINE]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Terminator (1984): Breakdown by Kain424<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the future, man and machine are nearing the end of a hard-fought war.\u00a0 Seeing their closing demise, the machines send an assassin back in time to kill the mother of the man that&#8217;s lead to their downfall, and the humans send Michael Biehn back to stop it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE EXECUTION]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As both the writer and director, James Cameron seems to understand how to make something both grim <em>and <\/em>cool.\u00a0 <strong>The Terminator<\/strong> is, stylistically, an attempt at horror, <em>noir<\/em>, science fiction, and Action.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not saying it succeeds on all accounts, but the result is very impressive, even twenty five years later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorKiller.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most interesting, is that the antagonist takes on an emulative quality, and becomes an embodiment of the audience&#8217;s visceral and inhibited desires.\u00a0 He is an invincible machine, heavily goal-oriented, that acts without any perceived consequences.\u00a0 Schwarzenegger plays the part with underrated intensity, at times moving like a shear force of will, and at others with the static, electronic motions of a surveillance camera.\u00a0 If anything, the film is an excellent showcase of Arnie&#8217;s skills with a gun, and his charisma (even in the role of a villain) as a star.\u00a0 You want to see more of him, and he remains a powerful force even when off-screen.<\/p>\n<p>The Action sequences are evenly spaced throughout the film, and Cameron seems to enjoy building up to each one with high moments of tension, like a snake about to strike.\u00a0 Once an Action scene begins, it quickly elevates into carefully edited chaos.\u00a0 There are gunfights, shootouts, and car chases.\u00a0 For a first-time Action director, Cameron seems to know what he&#8217;s doing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorShotty.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add to that Brad Fiedel&#8217;s excellent synthesized score and the whole thing is given a very powerful, mechanical quality, with an epic tone.\u00a0 Fucking classic.<\/p>\n<p>The film is really a chase movie, and because most moments of levity were edited out of the final product, it feels a bit like it never lets up.\u00a0 This creates thrills of a rare kind and also one of the best false endings in film history.\u00a0 <strong>The Terminator<\/strong> has a gritty feel to it, and the movie&#8217;s violence helps pitch the overall feel of everything from sci-fi Action more towards horror territory.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[HOW BAD-ASS ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS?]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Terminator101.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong><a title=\"Arnold Schwarzenegger\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=22\" target=\"_self\">Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/a> is The Terminator, T-800 Model 101<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Built like a tank and just as powerful, the Terminator is frightening and awesome at the same time.\u00a0 He single-handedly takes on an entire police station filled with cops and wins.\u00a0 In fact, the Terminator survives dozens of gunshots, a motorcycle crash, being hit by a semi-truck, plastique bombs, and even an exploding tanker.\u00a0 He just keeps coming.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a reason Arnie is so well connected to this role.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can&#8217;t be bargained with.\u00a0 It can&#8217;t be reasoned with. It doesn&#8217;t feel pity!\u00a0 Or remorse! Or fear!\u00a0 And it absolutely will not stop!\u00a0 Ever!\u00a0 Until you are dead!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorKyle.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Michael Biehn is Kyle Reese<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Reese is a bad-ass from the future.\u00a0 It is shown that he spends his days fapping to a photo of Sarah Connor, but by nightfall, he leads missions into the rubble that once was L.A. to do battle with giant robot tanks and flying mechanical warships.\u00a0 Sure, next to the Terminator he looks weak and nonthreatening, but the guy can hold his own against cops and even dares to face-down the Terminator without a gun.\u00a0 Dumb, or bad-ass?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a thin line&#8211;You decide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorConnor.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Linda Hamilton is Sarah Connor<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sarah remains the damsel-in-distress for much of the film, effectively annihilating her case for bad-assitude until the final part of the film.\u00a0 With her sole protector\/newfound fuckfriend losing his strength through bullet holes, it&#8217;s up to her to find the inner and outer strength to keep going.\u00a0 For the last ten minutes or so, we are privy to a pretty bad-ass woman being pretty cool.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE BODY COUNT: 46 PEOPLE, 2 DOGS, AND 1 T-800]<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><strong><strong><strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Arnold&#8217;s model 101 Terminator kills <a title=\"The Terminator\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/main\/?p=132\" target=\"_self\">30 people<\/a>, and several others die in flashback scenes of a dismal future.\u00a0 The terminators of the future are just as deadly, and kill half as many there, as well as the dogs that detect them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[MOST SATISFYING DEATH]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Brian Thompson manages to land a strike with a switchblade on a naked Arnie.\u00a0 He pays for it with his life as the Terminator punches through his stomach and breaks his god-damn spine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorFisting.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[DUDESWEAT AND MACHISMO]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorPackage.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arnie walks around naked for a bit, but the only love scene featured in the film is between a man and a woman.\u00a0 I blame the fact that the 80s were not yet in full swing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EXPLOITATION AND MISOGYNY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We get both sides of the feminine coin here, as Sarah Connor goes from a ditzy waitress to a stoic, mother-of-the-savior-of-mankind in about two hours.\u00a0 Points for progress, I guess.\u00a0 Still, you <em>do<\/em> get to see her ta-tas.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[EPIC MOMENT AND BEST ONE-LINER]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sarah Connor thinks she is being followed.\u00a0 Finally getting a hold of the police, they tell her to stay in a public place so she&#8217;ll remain safe.\u00a0 Sarah camps out in a crowded nightclub, but calls her home to tell her roommate where she is.\u00a0 This alerts the Terminator to her whereabouts, and he is anything but afraid of crowds.\u00a0 In the next scene he is shown, already at the club.\u00a0 A bouncer tries to stop him from entering and Schwarzenegger crushes the guy&#8217;s fucking hand without showing a modicum of worry.<\/p>\n<p>The way Arnold nails the scene is in his ability to sell the Terminator&#8217;s complete and inhuman focus on his mission that, we the audience, know as well as the T-800.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an excellent moment, and my favorite of the film, as it more than adequately says everything about the Terminator, while still leaving us wondering about him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allouttabubblegum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/TerminatorTechNoir.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for one-liners, there are aplenty, but I&#8217;ll go with the scene that made the film famous.\u00a0 Schwarzenegger is denied entry into a police station, but he surveys the area for a brief moment, then leans in and intones threateningly, <strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be back.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s great about this one-liner is not that it follows an epic action scene, but that it promises one to come.\u00a0 And come, it does.\u00a0 For the next several minutes, the Terminator mercilessly guns down an outmatched police force in a sequence that wouldn&#8217;t be rivaled in the annals of bad-assery until 15 years later in <strong>The Matrix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>[THE MORAL OF THE STORY]<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Keep your chin up, you have no idea what you might be worth in the future.\u00a0 And Arnold Schwarzenegger is nearly impossible to kill.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[THE SIGNS OF SCHWARZENEGGER: 5
